Property Description
The Gale House is a Colonial Revival residence dating to 1905, set on a third of an acre on Albemarle Road, perhaps the grandest residential street in the city. Conceived by developer Dean Alvord in 1899 as a vision of the country within the city, Prospect Park South was planned as a suburban enclave of architecturally distinctive, freestanding homes, generous lots, and tree-lined streets.
Attributed to architect H.B. Moore, the house draws inspiration from Stanford White's Atlantic Yacht Club in Seagate. A two-story Ionic portico, 25-foot fluted columns, and eyebrow dormers define its distinctive silhouette. Featured in the AIA Guide to New York City, the residence is the most defining home in the historic district.
Over the past decade, the current architect-owner has extensively restored the house, bringing it new life while preserving its architectural integrity. The original cedar clapboard siding, monumental columns, and front and rear porches were carefully restored, alongside what the New York Times called a "striking assortment of windows" (seventy-four in total – sixteen of which were replaced to match the original period detailing and now feature insulated glazing).
Inside, new mechanical systems include concealed air conditioning across thirteen independent zones, twenty independently controlled heating zones, and radiant floor heating. Plumbing and electrical systems were replaced throughout, integrating modern performance within the original structure.
Quarter-sawn oak floors, restored pocket doors, and intricate plasterwork establish the character of the interiors. Antique mantels and vintage lighting add detail throughout. A sweeping staircase rises from the foyer, where a wood-burning fireplace anchors the entry. An oak-and-leather library and curved parlor lead to the dining room, with its mahogany paneling, working gas fireplace, and views across the garden.
Beyond the dining room, a 700-square-foot kitchen combines custom cabinetry, Calacatta quartzite, stainless steel work surfaces, and a marble farmhouse sink. Sub-Zero refrigeration, a professional Viking range, and a walk-in pantry feel inherent to the space. An antique limestone mantel frames another wood-burning fireplace, while French doors open onto a bluestone terrace and south-facing lawn, extending the kitchen outdoors.
The second floor accommodates the primary suite, where oversized bow windows frame views of the house's monumental columns. Herringbone Brazilian cherry floors define the bedroom, while a dressing room and custom closets provide dedicated storage. The en-suite bathroom pairs a clawfoot tub with oak cabinetry, intricate millwork, and treetop views. Four additional bedrooms and two full bathrooms complete the floor.
Originally a ballroom, the third floor features a cathedral ceiling, a 1905 billiards table, an antique bar, and a home theater. An antique spiral staircase leads to a skylit loft. Three additional bedrooms and two bathrooms provide further accommodation for guests.
With its own private entrance, the English basement functions as a self-contained entertainment space. Exposed beams, a wood-burning fireplace, gym area, and cedar sauna are positioned alongside a secondary kitchen, guest bedroom and two full bathrooms.
Outside, the front and rear porches have been rebuilt with new foundations and brick paver flooring, retaining the house's original proportions and detailing. A fully enclosed garden, mature trees, and established hedging create a sense of seclusion. A gravel driveway and detached garage with electric-vehicle charging complete the property.
Prospect Park and the Parade Grounds are two blocks away, and the B and Q trains are a five minute walk.
The Gale House is a piece of collectible architecture unlike anything else you will find in New York.
